Sports authorities of the western Matanzas province are planning to turn Palmar del Junco, where the first official baseball game in Cuba was placed 138 years ago, into a tourist attraction. The project will attract Cuban and foreign visitors to the facility´s museum, exhibition games to be played here, meetings with sports glories and rental of baseball implements like bats, gloves and balls, as was informed here.

Visitors will also find a Handicraft Fair of the game paraphernalia, a cafeteria, store with sports articles, books, postcards and photos. A market study of the project has been completed and

organizers are in the phase of finding potential investment partners.

Located in the Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood of Matanzas, 70 miles east of Havana, Palmar del Junco is a national monument that is one of the oldest of its kind in the world.

Specialists consider that it being located between the nation´s capital and the number one beach resort, Varadero, make it attractive enough for domestic and foreign visitors.

The investment program includes the reorganization, reconstruction and completion of the museum hall and other related structures, the creation of an information center and a conference room.

The first baseball game was held in Palmar del Junco stadium on December 27, 1874 to start the sports tradition that has become the passion of all Cubans.

The teams of Habana Baseball Club and the Matanzas locals met with the uneven store of 51 runs by the visitors to nine of the locals at that historical inaugural game. Famous Cuban baseball players like The Immortal Martin Dihigo; José de la Caridad Méndez (The Black Diamond), Gaspar “El Curro” Pérez, Félix Isasi, Wilfredo Sánchez, Rigoberto Rosique and Lázaro Junco, among others, played in this field.

At present, the stadium is home to the provincial academy of baseball, while the headquarters of the big games in Matanzas is the stadium Victoria de Giron, inaugurated on February 26, 1977.
