Saratoga Hotel

Saratoga Saratoga Hotel

The Hotel dates back to 1879, and was located at 545 Calzada del Monte, right across from Fraternity Park,at the time known as Campo de Marte. Years later, the building becomes the hotel Isla de Cuba. Sometimes between 1915 and 1925 the hotel is relocated in its present setting, across from La Fuente de la India- also known as Noble Habana- but only occupied the 3rd floor. Latter, in 1933, the magnificent Hotel Saratoga takes up the whole building.

The 1930s were a milestone in the history of the Hotel Saratoga, with its renowned “Aires Libres”, excellent gastronomy and the performance of popular Cuban orchestras like the famous Anacaona, a women’s orchestra that made a name for itself playing there. The hotel gained prestige with frequent visits of local celebrities and socialites.

The hotel is located on Paseo del Prado and Dragones Street, a privileged intersection in Old Havana. Explore the irresistible vitality of the city and visit the Nation’s Capitol building and Fraternity Park, the famous Partagás Cigar Factory and Cuba’s most important opera and ballet house: Havana’s Gran Teatro. When the sun is setting stroll down Paseo del Prado to Havana’s seawall, the malecón. The Hotel Saratoga is perfect for guests who wish to combine visits to places of historical-cultural interest and the city’s night life.

The shower was powerful; you can see from the hotel the famous Capitol, Partagas Cigar Factory, by taxi its 5 minutes to Cathedral Square and Bodeguita Del Medio Restaurant you can walk to (abut 20 minutes) to hot for us we prefer go by taxi.

Very expensive and very mediocre food except breakfast staff are not very friendly ,we complain about a little problem with a window in our room and they not fix immediately.

It is not a crowded hotel fortunately; it is a place for you to enjoy the quiet, the ambience, the smell of cohibas while sipping your Cuban drink mojito

The Saratoga was strategically located. The Partagas factory was just 109.36 yds away and all other attractions within the Old city was within walking distance. Fantastic location, right beside the Capitol and Parque Central

We stayed at the Saratoga in one of the 2 Capitolio suites. It was reasonably spacious but the view of the Capitolio was from the bedroom, or rather the small bedroom balcony. The suite was very comfortable and well equipped, although the sofa was so deep that it was necessary to pile several cushions behind one’s back for back support.. There was lots of noise from the street when we were trying to sleep.

Our room was european standards. The main restaurant on the ground floor is pleasant and the food is very good – especially the buffet breakfast with a hot dish cooked to order. However, it became an Italian restaurant in the evening – why not Cuban food, which is what we went to Cuba for?

Exellent room with a nice view. The tapas in the bar next to that restaurant are also very good, although the tapas ended up costing almost as much as the meal in the restaurant.
Don’t even think of trying to use your credit card – they charge a surcharge of over 11% (on prices that are already pretty steep).

The rooftop terrace is a lovely place for a drink and the swimming pool was virtually deserted. Sadly, there were never enough sunbeds when we wer there late afternoon.
The best thing about the Saratoga is its excellent location. You can easily walk to anywhere in Old Havana.

We ate at the nearby El Floridita restaurant (an old hemingway haunt) and El Templete near the harbour – food, service and ambience was excellent at both restaurant. More of a special meal than at the Saratoga.

The one thing that upset us was that, when we left the hotel with our driver we were hauled in off the street back to Reception so that the maid could check our mini bar – even though we had given them our completed mini bar form and paid all the extras less than an hour earlier! It left a very bad taste in our mouths, especially as we had spent a lot of money staying, eating and drinking at the hotel. We won’t be going back.

We got a standerd room which was very nice although no proper window, this looked into the middle of the hotel over the bar. So no natural light and you smelled chip fat if you ever did open the window. We did like the hotel but would defo get another room again and wouldnt recomend the standard. The food was great, put on a lovely breakfast, they gave us a free meal as we were honeymooners and we paid for the drink. I had heard people complaining about the price, yes it was more expensive compared to bars in havana but compared to UK prices it was the same. We had a bottle of Rose with our meal and it cost about £16 which i thought was fair. A beer was about £2.50. Staff was nice and roof pool and bar was great, lovely to watch the sunset.

The buffet breakfast was really lovely. The coffee was also very good. The roof terrace with city view, pool, sunbeds, bar, gym.. was top class & sets this hotel apart.
We loved watching the world go by from our bedroom window seats.

The deluxe room was very spacious as was the bathroom. A desk with data port to plug in your laptop was free of charge. The wfi in the lobby could be purchased. The staff were all very helpful. Overall, it was a touch of luxury in Cuba & I doubt there could be a nicer hotel in Havana.

The Saratoga hotel was absolutely lovely! So classy!

Desk staff was very informative and answered all questions we had. We used that map for the whole of our stay and we got good use out of it! I think we covered every square inch of the city. I have never been anywhere so interesting – what a culture shock!

The bar had a good drinks menu which included cocktails, soft drinks and coffees, etc.
There was a restaurant (Mirador) on the roof terrace, but this never seemed to be open.
The roof top views were amazing! Straight ahead was Chinatown and to the right was the Capitol Building.

  19. Anie said... :

The rooftop pool was really nice, usually pretty quiet. We only used it once as there was so much to see and do in Havana. There were some lovely comfy sun loungers on the terrace, but I couldn’t lie there for long – it was just so hot, a real sun trap up there!

  20. 89 06 said... :

Our room was great and the view was brilliant! There are window seats and you could lie there and watch the world go by, all the old cars, the horse and carts, etc and obviously the grand buildings – the cigar factor is just across the road. It was so quiet even though it was right on a busy road, but if you opened your window you could hear all the hustle and bustle of Havana.

The room was immaculate. One of the cleanest hotel rooms I have ever stayed in. All modern and new. The bed was huge! There was a TV and DVD player plus a desk with internet connections. The wardrobe was big with lots of storage space. There was a safe in the wardrobe and this was free of charge.

The Hotel was very nicely located, our room was comfy and the the price for breakfast and the service was a litle overpriced.anyway for us it is the best hotel in Cuba

Arriving at the hotel we were pleasantly surprised. The staff were friendly from opening the main doors for us, helping with our luggage & taking it up to our room. Our rooms were both of a similar standard. The rooms were reasonably large with big comfy beds & a long window seat & 2 small windows. The bathroom was lovely, very clean during the whole of our stay

  25. Lenny said... :

The hotel provides a beautiful rooftop terrace with a small pool, unfortunately it was too cold to have a swim, but it was nice to lay out & the views must be some of the best in the city. I used the gym a few times & it was adequate for me, although others may need a few more machines/weights.
None of us felt unsafe, which may be strange considering the streets are very dark at night as they don’t switch on the streetlights!

A nice, big room with two huge windows affording a magnificent view of the Capitolio, with the circling old cars and cycle taxisand views across to the Art Deco tour-de-force of Edificio Bacardi. There are rooms called Patio Rooms but these look into an internal light well and my personal opinion is that the premium rates which the Saratoga commands isn’t really worth it if you don’t get the mind blowing view.

    Exellent food gormet definitely!!!!!

The room was big, well appointed, clean , comfortable and the bathroom. The staff were helpful
The hotel is Cuban five star in an international/art deco style. The pool is on the rooftop, is quite brilliant and since the temp reached 30 on 3 of the days we were there it was really useful in keeping cool!
We ate and drank well at the roof top pool bar/cafe and drank and had tapas at the mezzanine bar.Breakfasts are very good with the quality of the (Cuban) coffee particularly noteworthy.

We could see the Capitol building from our window, The bathroom was also spacious with a massive walk-in rain shower Breakfast was fantastic and the staff from the porter to the Concierge were so helpful and friendly. The outside has been restored so you’re in a beautiful Spanish colonial building, hence can tell you’re in Havana, but as you step inside you have all the facilities you could want. Although at night, you can hear the traffic- it only added to the experience

The Saratoga Hotel is opposite the main capital square in the centre of Havana. The location is absolutely spot on to explore Havana. A litle noise The traffic noise starts about 6am, but we found that we were awake anyway with the time difference. The hotel has been refurbished I understand in recent years and the original floors split into two floors each and therefore the windows have been split between the divided floors, which means that you do not have much of a view out of the windows.
The beds are very comfortable, clean and spacious, and you are provided with all the necessary bathroom accessories in the bathroom.

The breakfasts were good and an extensive range, but you had to ask for coffee/tea. They also provided you with boiled eggs, omelette etc, to your requirement, but again you had to ask for them.
The concierge at the Saratoga was brilliant in giving advice on restaurants – we went to a number of Paladares and official restaurants and I have separately put comments against each of them. Just as a summary of food we experienced in Cuba. People say it is bland, but in fact we found the food to be excellent and if you like seafood, superb and very good value
