Raquel Hotel

Raquel HotelAt the East end of a rather unappealing residential area, the Raquel’s immediate surroundings are less than pretty, but the Plaza Vieja is just down the street and the hotel is about 5 blocks away from all of the more interesting places in the colonial heart of Havana. A stroll up San Ignacio takes you straight to the Cathedral of Havana.A stunning work of architecture, the Raquel contrasts dramatically with its not-so-picturesque surroundings, a rather humble residential area whose one, redeeming virtue is its proximity to the Plaza Vieja and other sites of interest in the Old Town.

The Raquel is also known for its references to Jewish tradition and faith, which consist of various decorative items (such as a stone engraving of a star of David at the reception) and symbolic artifacts (mezuzahs affixed to room doorframes) scattered about the establishment. The elegant hotel restaurant also serves typical Jewish cuisine, such as borscht and latkes.

service and facilities are way below what you would expect for 4 stars, however having now travelled all over Cuba, I now understand why it has 4 stars there. It is a nice place, and the building itself is superb”

We stayed for 3 nights, and I would be happy to stay there again if I was in Havana, It is a wonderfully restored old building in the heart of Havana Vieja, about a few steps from Plaza Vieja. Everything in the old city is in easy walking distance

The building has been well restored and the public areas are well maintained. The lobby area is a marvel to behold.

Our bedroom was on 3rd floor and was big, well furnished by Cuban standards but old fashioned by European standards. It did not have a window to the outside, instead having an internal window on to the central area what a piti.

The reception staff had an air of indifference to customers that is unfortunately the norm in Cuba. You will be hard pushed to find a friendly ,helpfull hotel receptionist anywhere in the country.

Basically, if it you first night in Cuba, remember Cuba is unique diferent to any other country you have experience. But that is probably why you have come here. To a large extent what you get in the packet exactly what you expected to get in the packet

In the heart of Old Havana, it is a superb location, in a beautifully restored building, helpful & friendly staff. We stayed here twice, the first time our room had no window, but it was a least peaceful and quiet at night; the second time we had a gorgeous superior room at the front of the hotel but it was a bit noisy. Breakfast could be improved, but OK by the standard of other breakfasts we had in Cuba. It’s not a cheap option but in Havana you can pay the same and get a lot worse.
