Ambos Mundos Hotel

Ambos Mundos Though the figure of Ernest Hemingway is immediately and almost invariably invoked in any description of the hotel, the Ambos Mundos’ most attractive attribute is doubtless its magnificent location: steps away from the Plaza de Armas, the restored, 1920s establishment stands at one of the liveliest intersections in the Old Town, close to just about all of the most interesting sites of Havana’s colonial centre.

Not all of the Ambos Mundos’ rooms have views, but those that do overlook the cobbled and picturesque expanse of Obispo and Mercaderes, which benefit from their proximity to the Plaza de Armas: costumed performers, including mulatta florists in colonial attire, old fortune tellers, a squad of soldiers in period English uniforms and a carnivalesque troupe of actors on stilts, are sure to enliven these vistas during your stay at the hotel.

We were shown to our rooms by a very friendly lift operator who, for some reason, didn’t warn us that there was no running tap water.Unfortunately, the following morning there was still no running water in the bathroom. The new hotel receptionist, who was even more unfriendly and unwelcoming than her colleague the previous evening when we checked in, did her best to ignore me and was extremely rude when she did eventually acknowledge my presence. Anyway, she told me that there was no running water anywhere in Havana, which did not go down well with my wife and daughter who had not had a bath or shower for close to 36 hours and couldn’t use the toilets in their rooms.

The staff at the Ambos Mundos hotel is extremely rude and unhelpful. While checking out at reception, I managed to lose my wallet between removing my key cards and ending a mobile call to Virgin to discuss the taxi fare to our new hotel. I won’t go into how I managed to lose my wallet at the reception desk, but neither the receptionist, nor any other member of the hotel staff working in the lobby area wanted to help or assist us in any way whatsoever. This included the new and arrogant lift operator, who was constantly and suspiciously wandering back and forth between the lift and the reception desk, and the three men in police style uniforms standing at the near by entrance and masquerading as security guards. Furthermore, with the huge turnover in staff, no one considered it appropriate to report or in any way register the loss of my wallet.

The location of this hotel is great, the bar and lobby area are great and you can excuse the piano music and general noise when you try to sleep and the view of the Old Town from the roof top restaurant is great.

We could tolerate the damp musky smell of the rooms, we could tolerate the general run down state of the rooms, we could tolerate the time it took for the lift operator to get the lift to your floor and we could tolerate the awful excuse of a breakfast they served up.
